The term “Scoliosis” means there is a curve in the spine.

Scoliosis can afflict at any age.

There are many causes of scoliosis, but it also happens for reasons we don’t know despite how much research is done. People can be born with it, nerve and spinal cord abnormalities can trigger it, muscle imbalance is thought to perpetuate it, or it can develop with age due to wear and tear, among other reasons.

These curves are often painless, but sometimes can press on nerve structures and be very painful.

Diagnosis

The success of treatment options depend on an accurate diagnosis, using a combination of but not limited to: physical exam, x-ray, CT scan, MRI, diagnostic injections, and EMG investigation.

Treatment

Treatment options include observation (monitoring the progression of the curve), anti-inflammatories, steroids, physical therapy, core strengthening, injections, surgical decompression, or surgical fusion. All treatment options depend on the location/type of scoliosis and a custom treatment plan is recommended for each and every patient.
