Compression fractures are breaks in the spinal bones that cause a bone to collapse on itself.

Think of a bone changing from a lego shape to a pizza slice.

Compression fractures can be very debilitating. Often, the pain can take 3 months to resolve.

Causes include osteoporosis (weak bone structure), falls, tumor, trauma, etc.

If the collapsing bone is pressing on a nerve(s) it can cause even more dysfunction, pain, problems with walking, bowel/bladder issues, numbness, and weakness.

Diagnosis

The success of treatment options depend on an accurate diagnosis, using a combination of but not limited to: physical exam, x-ray, CT scan, and MRI.

Treatment

Treatment options include anti-inflammatories, bracing, physical therapy, weight loss (to lessen the load your back carries), core strengthening, injections, surgical cementing to help the bone structure, or surgical stabilization. All treatment options depend on the location/type of compression fracture and a custom treatment plan is recommended for each and every patient.

**Please note, if you have a compression fracture and have a loss of bowel/bladder function or saddle anesthesia, please go to your local emergency room as this is an emergency.
